Socket Preservation

After a tooth has been extracted, the area surrounding the socket can recede which can cause problems with jaw structure and can change the appearance in cheeks and lips. Because of jaw and gum recession, it can cause problems in the future when the patient decides to restore the missing tooth using an implant. To help preserve the socket for future implants, the empty socket can be replaced with bone to aid in retaining the structure of the bone. This will allow the socket to heal without the bone receding and collapsing into the socket. If you plan to have an implant placed in the future, let your dentist or oral surgeon know so that they can help create a treatment plan for you.
